We would like to extend a hearty “Thanks!” to all those dedicated Docents who spent hours providing salmon knowledge to 5th graders from the Olympia School District, rain or shine. The trail was open to the general public since October 29, with Docents providing tours and general information about Chum behavior and salmon needs.  If you were one of the lucky visitors to the trail, please come back next year and bring a friend.

We would like to thank the Mason Conservation District and Taylor Shellfish for their continued support of the Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail – a premier Northwest interpretive trail.Fish at Fiscus Creek

This one mile easy hike through our Northwest Rain Forest is a great way to spend an afternoon or a couple hours.  Volunteer Docents will be on hand to answer questions and provide insights into salmon spawning behavior.  Please come dressed for the weather, leave your dog at home and make the Trail an afternoon outing.

We have been hosting grade school kids every day this week. On average, there are between one and three classes – that’s approximately 90 kids a day!  By the end of the season, every Olympia School District 4th Grade class will have visited the Trail.  This is a fabulous learning experience for youngsters.

KCST News http://spsseg.org/2010/10/kcst-news/ http://spsseg.org/2010/10/kcst-news/#comments Tue, 05 Oct 2010 16:05:29 +0000 Jerilyn Walley http://spsseg.org/?p=1786 We are excited to announce that SPLASH 2010 raised $4,200! Over 60 people attended this year’s event and enjoyed a host of donated goodies including steamed mussels provided by Taylor Shellfish, Fish Brewery beer and Olympic Mountain Ice Cream.  There were loads of wonderful appetizers on the sandbar and the natural beauty of the Trail provided the perfect venue for a sunny August day.  One guest exclaimed “This is the best nature walk I’ve ever been on!” We’d also like to thank all the event volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event a success – you know who you are!

We are getting ready for this years CHUM RUN! To prepare for another great year of wild salmon viewing at the trail, we are hosting a Docent Training on Saturday, October 23 at 9:00 a.m.  This annual training keeps our Docent volunteers up-to-date on the latest chum information for sharing with trail visitors.  It lasts for 7 hours, so come prepared for the fall northwest weather possibilities.   Please call Lance at 360/412-0808 Ext 2 to register or for more information.

The Trail will open Monday, November 1 for school groups.  If your school would like to visit the trail during the week, please contact Mason Conservation District at (360) 427-9436 Ext 13.

The general public can visit the Trail starting Saturday, November 6.  The trail will be open, with trained Docents to answer questions, on all weekends in November, Veterans Day and the day after Thanksgiving from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We received a matching funds grant from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to fix the viewing platform that was damaged last winter.  We are soliciting donations to help with the match.  Please make a donation on-line or by sending a check or money order.  All donations are tax deductible.

Parking will be available at the Trail.  For driving directions and additional Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail information please follow the link to the Kennedy Creek page on this website.

Special thanks go out to Taylor Shellfish, Mason CD, Mason WSU Extension, and SPSSEG for supporting and coordinating this event.   Plus we have received numerous in-kind community donations  including Fish Tale beer and Taylor Shellfish.    Come see for yourself how much fun this event is.

SPSSEG "Chums"

On July 31, 2010, SPSSEG competed in the first annual Multi-adventure race for salmon, the Olympia Traverse.  Our team included two staff members and two Board members.  Although we didn’t win the race, we had a great time supporting the event.   The race featured a 4 mile run completed by Kristin Williamson, 8 mile mountain bike completed by Lance Winecka, 22 mile road bike by Joe Williams, and finished up with a 3.5 mile kayak by Duane Fagergren.  The event eventually ended at Fish Tale Pub for a community celebration, beer and lunch.   For more information please check out the website.  www.olympiatraverse.com.

SPSSEG will start training for next years Olympia Traverse as early as tomorrow!
