Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail Closes

Another great season of watching Chum spawn in the beautiful Kennedy and Fiscus Creeks has come to a close. We would like to extend a hearty “Thanks!” to all those dedicated Docents who spent hours providing salmon knowledge to 5th graders from the Olympia School District, rain or shine. The trail was open to the general public since October 29, with Docents providing tours and general information about Chum behavior and salmon needs. If you were one of the lucky visitors to the trail, please come back next year and bring a friend.

We would like to thank the Mason Conservation District and Taylor Shellfish for their continued support of the Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail – a premier Northwest interpretive trail.

Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail Opens Oct 29, 2011!

The Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail is open to the public during the weekends starting Oct 29, 2011 from 10-4 pm (sat and sun). The Trail is also open on Veterans Day (Friday 11/11) and the day after Thanksgiving (11/25). Volunteer docents will be on hand to answer any questions about chum salmon and their life cycle. The Trail is reserved for school groups during the weekdays. The local run peaks in mid November and the Trail closes on Sunday Nov 27. The Trail is located on Old Olympic Highway off Highway 101 near mile post 357 (approximately half way between Olympia and Shelton). Each year approximately 15,000-60,000 chum complete their iconic and amazing journey in Kennedy Creek. In 2009, the Trail was featured in the National Geographic Traveler magazine. 4th Annual Kennedy Creek Salmon Splash

There will be live music, and great food, so you won’t want to miss out! $35.00/person ticket, or 4 tickets for $120, includes appetizers, shellfish, beverages, and dessert. All Splash proceeds directly support the Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail Education Program, and every $35 raised at Splash will support 10 student visitors! Parking will be at the Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail Lot.

Free Lecture at WET Science Center

On Tuesday, May 17th, our Executive Director Lance Winecka and Project Manager Kristin Williamson will be teaming up with the South Sound Estuary Association to give a lecture about “On-the-Ground Salmon Habitat Restoration: From the Headwaters to Puget Sound”. Its from 7:00pm-9:00pm at the WET Science Center in Downtown Olympia. Lance and Kristin will be talking about several on-the-ground restoration projects including examples from upland rivers and streams, down to the marine shoreline. See flyer below for more details. Upcoming Events

As we move closer to summer, SPSSEG is working hard to implement education and outreach for our organization. We will be participating in numerous environmental events around the Puget Sound here in the next couple of months.

The first event coming up is Forest Festival Field Day on Thursday, April 28th. This event is for Mason County 5th graders to come and learn about the forest ecosystem and how it applies to their everyday lives. SPSSEG will be speaking about the connections between salmon and the forest.

The next event we will be participating in is the Tacoma-Pierce County Children’s Water Festival on Friday, April 29th. Over 750 fifth-grade students from throughout Pierce County will be attending the 2011 Festival. Each classroom group will attend six different 25-minute sessions, including interactive classroom activities, outdoor games, larger “game show” style presentations, and an “Expo Hall” filled with all kinds of water related displays and activities. SPSSEG will have a display in the “Expo Hall” that explains how keeping our watersheds clean is beneficial to our salmon runs.

Earth Day is an event put on by Mason County Conservation District and SPSSEG will be attending this event to talk about our organization. This event will have many different aspects including hands-on family friendly activities related to natural resources; on site workshops; restoration opportunities; information from local resource agencies and volunteer groups; and Puget Sound Starts Here posters, stickers, and information on how you can help Puget Sound.

Lastly, SPSSEG will be participating in Mason County’s “Kids With Conservation Knowledge” (KWCK) event on May 27th, and May 28th. This event will be kind of like a field day for kids to come and play outside and learn how to be more conscientious of their impacts on the natural environment, and what they can do to help.

SPSSEG is proud to be participating in these upcoming educational events and we hope to do more in the future. Check back at the end of the month for pictures and information on how these events turned out!

Work Party A Success!

Thanks so much to everyone who came out to the Kennedy Creek Work Party/Chum Emergence Viewing! I had so much fun working with you all, and it was interesting to see the little tiny chum fry as they swam around in the creek. It was amazing how much work we got done in such a short time! The trail looks absolutely wonderful and the new viewing platform is finally finished! Don’t forget to come visit the trail during the months of October and November to see the salmon spawn and see all the changes to the forest surrounding the trail and the creek. Thanks again, we couldn’t have done it without all of our volunteers!
